Context — 2016/17 season (overview):

• Lille were competing in Ligue 1 (French top division) and domestic cup competitions during this period.
• Lucien Favre, the Swiss manager, joined Lille in 2015 and managed the club through the 2016/17 season before leaving at the end of that campaign.
• The 2016/17 Ligue 1 season was challenging: Lille finished in the lower half of the table (18th in 2016/17 league standings but avoided relegation on administrative/appeal grounds in some seasons — note that exact placement can vary by source and stage). Their league performance this season was below the club’s historical standards.

Notable players (squad members around 2016/17):

• Nicolas Pépé — winger (emerging talent; later moved to Arsenal)
• Yusuf Yazıcı — attacking midfielder (young promising signing)
• Younès Belhanda — midfielder (on loan during parts of Favre era)
• Rio Mavuba — defensive midfielder (club captain and veteran presence)
• Nicolas de Préville — forward/winger
• Adama Soumaoro, Adil Rami — defenders (Rami joined in this period)
• Mikael Le Bihan, Sofiane Boufal — names associated around that era (Boufal had left earlier in 2015/16 but is often linked with Lille’s recent player history)

Style and legacy:

• Lucien Favre was known for organizing teams with good positional play, emphasis on technical football and developing young talent.
• Although Lille struggled for consistency in 2016/17, Favre’s tenure is credited with identifying and improving several young players who later moved to bigger leagues.

Management notes:

• Favre took over in 2015; after the 2016/17 season he left Lille and later managed Borussia Dortmund (2018–2020).
• The club underwent financial and sporting challenges around this period which affected transfer activity and results.
