Coach (head coach) around 2016–2017:

• Vanderlei Luxemburgo — started 2016 season as head coach but was dismissed in August 2016.
• Zé Ricardo — promoted from Flamengo’s youth setup, served as interim in August 2016 and was appointed head coach through the remainder of 2016 and into 2017. He remained Flamengo’s main coach until mid-2017 when he left the club (June 2017) to take another position.

About Zé Ricardo (José Ricardo Mannis):

• Born 1 October 1971 (Rio de Janeiro).
• Worked extensively in Flamengo’s youth academy before stepping up to the senior team.
• As first-team coach, he was praised for promoting young talents from the academy and for solidifying Flamengo’s organization and defensive structure compared with earlier 2016 instability.

Team performance & notable facts (2016–mid‑2017):

• Flamengo competed in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the 2017 Campeonato Carioca (state championship), the 2016 Copa do Brasil (they had been eliminated earlier in 2016) and the 2017 Copa Libertadores qualification phases (Flamengo did not participate in the 2017 Libertadores group stage because they had not qualified in 2016 league standings).
• Under Zé Ricardo, Flamengo improved league form in late 2016 and had a positive start in early 2017 Campeonato Carioca, while integrating several academy graduates into the first team.
• Key players around this period included Diego Alves (goalkeeper), Éverton Ribeiro (joined in mid-2016), Diego (playmaker), Paolo Guerrero (signed in 2016 but later faced eligibility issues in 2017 due to a doping suspension), and youngsters such as Vinícius Júnior (promoted from the youth ranks and made senior appearances before his high-profile 2017 transfer to Real Madrid later that year).

Management & context:

• Flamengo’s board and sporting project in 2016–2017 were focused on stabilizing results, restructuring the club’s football operations, and combining experienced signings with homegrown talent.
• The club’s large fan base (one of the biggest in Brazil) and commercial profile continued to drive expectations and investment.

Summary: Zé Ricardo rose from Flamengo’s youth teams to take over the senior squad in August 2016 and led the club through late 2016 and into mid‑2017. His tenure is remembered for youth promotion, tactical organization, and a period of relative stability after managerial changes earlier in 2016.
