Context around 2016–2017:

• Levir Culpi, an experienced Brazilian coach, returned to Fluminense in 2016 initially as interim after a string of poor results; he had prior spells at many Brazilian clubs.
• During this period Fluminense competed in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the Campeonato Carioca (state championship of Rio de Janeiro) and the Copa do Brasil. Squad performance and league position varied across the 2016 and 2017 campaigns as the club underwent managerial changes and squad turnover.
• Key players around that era included (depending on exact month) figures such as Richarlison (sold to Watford in 2017), Gustavo Scarpa, Pierre, and Sornoza (on loan), among others who featured for the first team in those seasons.

Notable results and facts (summary):

• Fluminense finished 2016 in mid-table in Série A but faced inconsistency; 2017 also had fluctuations and managerial shifts.
• The club regularly contested state-level competition (Campeonato Carioca) and had ambitions in national cup contests.
